Appalachian State won the division 1-triple A football national championship in 2005. They beat Northern Iowa twenty one to sixteen to win the championship.

Appalachian's location in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina means that the university's athletic offerings are unparalleled in the state. The university's competitive varsity program is complemented by diverse outdoor recreational opportunities and non-varsity team sports.

Appalachian offers 9 varsity sports for men and 9 for women. An NCAA Division I program, the Mountaineers compete in the Southern Conference (Field Hockey competes in the NorPac). The 17,000-seat Kidd Brewer Stadium is home to Appalachian football, outdoor track and field, and field hockey, while the Holmes Convocation Center seats 8,400 for basketball, volleyball, and indoor track and field. Red Lackey Field currently hosts baseball, Varsity Gym is home to wrestling, and soccer and cross country compete at state farm field.

University Recreation, or UREC as it is known, currently oversees all non-varsity sports activities on campus, including intramurals, club sports, outdoor programs, and fitness and informal recreation.

Jnr Kevin Henry Hobson Henry Hobson Richardson scored all quadruplet touchdowns to lead No. 1 Appalachian State University to its s-heterosexual NCAA Division I Football Subject Championship with a 28-XVII triumph over No. 3 Massachusetts on Friday evening at Finley Sports Stadium.
